Kirkus Review - "..The author tells her story in straightforward, matter-of-fact language and with great honesty, as when she tells of weeping tears of joy the first time she’s able to shower, and even some humor, as when she calls recurrent abscesses “little bastards.” She’s also thoughtful and empathetic about her struggles to come to terms with the crash and its consequences." Pat Henman is a veteran of the Canadian theatre industry, having appeared in dozens of plays and musicals across the country. The British Columbia and Calgary spring tour of Beyond the Legal Limit , her latest project, was a critical and personal success.

"Pat Henman’s Beyond the Legal Limit performance transforms heart-breaking tragedy into triumph. Theatrical storytelling at its best. Don’t be afraid of coming to see this show … it’s a grand affirmation of the power of a family and caring community united against seemingly overwhelming odds.” Bill Usher, AD, Kicking Horse Cultural Centre, Golden.

"From the very beginning of Beyond the Legal Limit, you know you are in for a powerful ride. Deftly weaving warm family memories with harrowing flashbacks of a horrible accident, Henman vividly tells the story of a life forever changed by one fateful encounter. The fact that she is able to capture this in just an hour long performance - while artfully blending in music and voice - is a testament to the artist and her team. This is must-see theatre - highly recommended!" Paul Grace-Campbell, ED, The Langham Theatre, Kaslo

Reviews

“Beyond the Legal Limit is one of the most honest, gripping, heartbreaking—and yet life-affirming—books you’ll read this year. Pat is an accomplished Canadian actor and director with a wicked sense of humour. One sunny day in June of 2013, she and her daughter Maia were driving home to Nelson, B.C., and were hit head-on by a serial drunk driver.

The accident was catastrophic. The fact that they lived through it is extraordinary.

Pat tells her story with grace and humour and unfailing humanity. Her road to recovery was brutal and miraculous. I defy anyone to read this book and not fall in love with Pat and her family — or to read this book without raging at what she and Maia endured in their recovery and in the court system.

Beyond the Legal Limit is a page-turner, and should be required reading for anyone who’s ever gotten behind the wheel after drinking.”

Dramatic Presentation with Music

“It was incredible. Your performance, the beautiful singer, the piano accompaniment. What a wonderful idea to tap into the talents of each, and create a piece of performance art.”

“You have just proved that art, literature and music are more than the sum of their parts: art is a necessary, healing force.”

“The performance by Pat Henman is every bit as riveting as her book -- and in some ways even braver. It's a stunning story of human frailty and determination and, ultimately, redemption through art. Unmissable!”

“I've watched it 3 times now and have just been letting it all sink in…Congratulations on this marvelous and important achievement…”

"Oh, so powerful, I am overwhelmed with so many emotions. Brutal to hear but so incredibly well presented and so important. Absolutely outstanding! Tears still flowing."
